Name Change For Southern Baptists

Dr. Alexander Kurian

The largest Protestant denomination in U.S. with over 50,000 churches and 14.5 million members have decided to drop the name "Southern" because of its racial connotations associated with slavery. Social justice movements and the racial tension going on now in the country have definitely influenced the decision. The new proposed name is "Great Commission Baptists." Since the Southern Baptist (SBC) churches are autonomous, any church can still refer themselves as SB if they so choose. Though majority of the SB churches were mostly conservative, over the last many years, theological liberalism, feminism and radical theologies have fractured the SBC. The Conventions present leadership is vehemently criticized for their support for left-wing political agendas and compromise on several theological issues. Some churches have left the SBC in protest. Let us pray that the Lord may continue to bless the Great Commission Baptists to be faithful and committed to the WORD and carry on their mission in reaching out to a lost world. Their initiative in missions and Christian education have impacted the global church in the past. They have excelled in world missions more than any other Christian group. May the Lord keep them in the center of His Will and Word for His glory.
